SoH Reviews: Host (2020, Shudder)

Shudder has become a big go to for new and exclusive content. I was very curious about the app/platform as a whole before I started investing into it and now it’s become a great platform to see new or unique or even unknown to classic horror/thriller/sci-fi films.

Today we’re going to discuss a mini review of the latest release, Host.*

*warning, there might be spoilers available but not a lot!

Host, is about a group of friends, through zoom (or skype) are virtually coming together with a medium to do a seance. The problem is that they opened the door for something demonic to come. There’s more to it but that’s the general summary off the top of my head (and I watched this last week).

shudderhost1What I really liked about this was it felt very isolated in its own way. From what I read and seen online, it was shot through quarantine and it’s a great choice. I liked the different take of using technology in the narrative. It’s how we’re communicating more so now through zoom or skype of facetime and to have it be the connecting tissue to all the characters is great. I also liked how subtle things start, I mean, you have one girl who clearly didn’t believe and the others for the most part being respectful to a medium or the idea of a seance. And because of that one girl’s mistake in faking what she “heard”, it opened the door for something to walk in. Basically, I blame it on her.

One by one, each of the participants are attacked and the others are more or less forced to watch it go down. There is one character, a male friend and I’m assuming girlfriend or wife along with him that were attacked as well even if they weren’t a part of the initial seance so I wonder if him just reconnecting in the midst of it all was a trigger for his death.

shudderhost3Now the one thing I did not enjoy were the special effects in some areas. It looked cheap and I didn’t like the final jumpscare, it was a bit predictable.

Overall, Host is a definite watch. It’s only about 56 minutes long so a short film but a lot happens in that short period of time. I’d give it a 4 out of 5. Host, is directed by Rob Savage and stars Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, Caroline Ward, Teddy Linard and Seylan Baxter.
